Tacoma’s Climate Action: Progress and Community Initiatives

The City of Tacoma is making significant strides in its commitment to environmental sustainability, as detailed in the recently released 2025 Climate Action Plan Progress Report. This report highlights key achievements in urban forestry, clean mobility, and waste reduction, reflecting the city’s dedication to creating a healthier and more resilient community.

Urban Forestry Expansion

One of the notable accomplishments is the growth of Tacoma’s urban tree canopy. A recent Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) analysis revealed a 1% increase in the city’s overall tree canopy since 2017, bringing it to 21%. More impressively, targeted efforts in priority census blocks resulted in a 2% to 4% increase in canopy coverage. By utilizing a tree planting prioritization tool that incorporates urban heat island and equity data, the city ensures that the benefits of trees, such as cooling and improved air quality, reach the communities that need them most.

Advancements in Clean Mobility

To promote sustainable transportation, Tacoma launched an e-bike rebate program in Spring 2025. Funded by a Washington State Department of Ecology grant, the program distributed e-bikes to 213 residents, with 95% of the rebates awarded to low-income individuals. This initiative provides reliable, zero-emission transportation options and aligns with the city’s equity goals.

Waste Reduction Initiatives

The city’s Solid Waste Management team introduced the ‘Beyond the Bin’ program in 2025 to further local waste reduction efforts. Through eight community reuse events hosted over the summer, Tacoma residents successfully diverted and donated over 16,000 pounds of reusable items to local nonprofit partners, keeping valuable materials out of the landfill.

Community Engagement and Future Goals

These initiatives are part of Tacoma’s broader strategy to reach net-zero emissions by 2050, as outlined in the Climate Action Plan. The city continues to engage with community members and the Climate & Sustainability Commission to meet these critical future-focused goals. Residents are encouraged to participate in upcoming programs and provide feedback to help shape Tacoma’s sustainable future.
