Tacoma’s Climate Action: Progress and Community Initiatives

As Tacoma continues its commitment to environmental sustainability, recent initiatives highlight significant progress in urban forestry, clean mobility, and community engagement.

Urban Forestry Expansion

Efforts to enhance Tacoma’s urban tree canopy have yielded measurable results. A recent analysis revealed a 1% increase in the city’s overall tree canopy since 2017, bringing it to 21%. Notably, targeted equity efforts led to a 2-4% canopy increase in priority census blocks, ensuring that the benefits of trees reach communities most in need. This progress aligns with the city’s goal of building resilience against climate change impacts.

Advancements in Clean Mobility

To promote sustainable transportation, Tacoma launched an e-bike rebate program in Spring 2025. Funded by a Washington State Department of Ecology grant, the program distributed e-bikes to 213 residents, with 95% of rebates awarded to low-income individuals. This initiative provides reliable, zero-emission transportation options and supports the city’s equity goals.

Community Engagement and Waste Reduction

The city’s Solid Waste Management team introduced the ‘Beyond the Bin’ program in 2025 to further waste reduction efforts. Through eight community reuse events, over 16,000 pounds of reusable items were diverted from landfills and donated to local nonprofit partners. This initiative underscores Tacoma’s commitment to sustainability and community involvement.

Looking Ahead

While these achievements mark significant strides, Tacoma acknowledges the ongoing challenges in meeting its climate goals. Continued collaboration with community members and stakeholders is essential to build a more resilient and sustainable city for future generations.
